Frequently asked questions
Ownership & commercial use
Can I sell what I make with Motifold?+
Yes. Patterns, coordinates, recolours, mockups and scene images you make with Motifold can be used in personal and commercial work: products you sell, print-on-demand shops, Etsy digital paper, fabric, packaging and client projects. There is no extra licence to buy and no limit on the number of copies, on every plan, including free.
Who owns the images I create?+
You do. As far as Motifold and you are concerned, the images you create belong to you, and we assign to you any rights we may have in them. We don't claim ownership and we don't sell or license your images to anyone.
Is my pattern exclusive to me?+
Your files are private to your account. But AI models can produce similar results for similar prompts, so we can't guarantee that nobody else ever makes something alike. If exclusivity matters, change and combine the results (recolour, edit, build a collection), which also strengthens your own authorship.
Can I register copyright in an AI-generated pattern?+
It depends on your country. In the US, the Copyright Office's 2025 guidance says content generated purely by AI isn't protected, while human creative choices are: selecting, arranging and modifying the output, or your own artwork used as input. When registering, you need to disclose the AI-generated parts. For important work, ask a lawyer where you live.
What am I not allowed to make?+
Don't generate or sell designs that copy other people's artwork, trademarks, logos or characters (e.g. Disney, sports teams, luxury brands), or that show real people without permission. You're responsible for checking that what you sell doesn't infringe anyone's rights.
AI & disclosure
Does Motifold use generative AI?+
Yes, in the AI tools: AI seamless patterns, photo to pattern, variations and edits, AI scenes, and AI-made mockup templates. They use generative image models to create new pictures. The free tools (pattern generator, recolour, coordinates, product mockups and vectorize) don't generate new imagery: they draw, recolour or trace your design with fixed rules. Upscaling uses an AI super-resolution model that sharpens detail but doesn't invent new content. The photos in the mockup template library were created with AI.
Do I have to tell buyers that AI was used?+
Often, yes. Many marketplaces require it. Etsy, for example, asks sellers to tick “I used AI generative technology”, choose “Designed by” rather than “Made by”, and mention AI use in the description; failing to do so can lead to listings being removed. Other platforms (Amazon, print-on-demand sites, stock libraries) have their own rules, so check the one you sell on.
What should I write?+
A short, factual line is enough. For example: “Pattern designed by [your shop] with AI-assisted tools (Motifold), then edited and recoloured by hand.” If the mockup photo is AI-generated, you can add: “Product photo is a digital mockup.”
Do you train AI on my images?+
No. We don't use your uploads or creations to train any model. To generate an image, your prompt and reference images are sent to the AI model provider for that request only.
Free tools & credits
What is free?+
The pattern generator, recolour, coordinates, all product mockups, vectorize and upscaling (up to 2048 px) are free, with no credits. Examples on every page are free too.
How do credits work?+
AI tools use credits. The price is shown on the button before you generate (e.g. Moti v1 250 credits for 4 images). If a generation fails, the credits come back automatically.
Do credits expire?+
Subscription credits arrive every month. Credit packs you buy separately never expire, and they're only used after your subscription credits.
What is the beta invite code?+
During the beta, entering an invite code after signing up makes you a beta tester: every AI tool unlocked and 10,000 credits. Without a code you start with a free account and can add a code later on your account page.
Files & printing
Are the patterns really seamless?+
Yes. Every pattern tile repeats edge to edge without a visible join. The repeat preview (1×1, 2×2, 3×3) lets you check before you download.
What size do I need for printing?+
Multiply the print size in inches by the DPI: 300 for paper, about 150 for fabric. A 12-inch digital paper at 300 DPI is 3600 px. Free accounts export up to 2048 px; paid plans up to 10,000 px.
Which formats can I download?+
PNG and JPG on every plan, WebP from Starter, TIFF and print-ready PDF (with bleed and crop marks) on Pro. Vector SVG and screen-print separations are free.
Account, payment & privacy
Can I get a refund?+
Yes. If you're not happy, email us within 14 days of buying and we'll refund you. If a disproportionate share of the credits has been used, we may decline or refund only the unused part. See the Refund Policy.
Can I delete my account and images?+
Yes. Delete images from your library at any time, or email support@motifold.app to delete your account and all its data.
